The Lord is highly interested in communication. We can hear His voice, John 10:27 says, "my sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me". To Hear His voice is invaluable, instead of living and going thru life blindly. He can turn your whole situation around with just one word!
The Lord is constantly speaking to us, it's is like using a radio signal for instance, the radio is transmitting all day and night long, but if you are not tuned in on that station you hear nothing.
One key is to position yourself to hear from God, be in a quiet place and still your own thoughts and emotions, this takes time to master, but it does work and has worked for me constantly when I enter into that place. Psalm 46:10 states "Be still and know that I am God". Psalm 67:7 "be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him".
Soothing worship music can help you tune in and quiet your emotions and issues. God speaks thru dreams, visions, He will come to those who are poured out, see Acts 2:1-4. You can hear from the Lord through the word of God, this is always the very best.
With prayer requests He can and will use His word to answer you, be advised you can't put God in a box, He will surprise you in many ways in His answers, if you are listening and believe that it is Him who is answering your questions and giving you directions.
You have to believe God is flexible He is always here, Matthew 1:23 He calls us to draw near, Hebrews 10:19-22. " I pray that the eyes of your heart will be enlightened". Habakkuk 2:2 where Elijah described it as a still small voice 1 Kings 19:12.
You will not hear an audible voice, although He has done that with some, but in spontaneous thoughts, visions, feelings, or impressions. Thoughts come to remind you to pray for someone, or to go somewhere, or read something, or to be aware of things; this is one of many ways he directs.
You can journal or write out your prayers, dreams, and God can and will pick up in those writings and give you insight, clarity, vision before you know it you are writing what He is telling you.
After time with the Lord you will get to "know" you are hearing him and not your own thoughts. You can test your hearing, true words bubble up from our inner most being, and you can compare what you think or wrote to the word of God.
